“It’s a whole bunch of magazines, actually.” He started lifting them out and spreading them all over my lounge room floor. “Bodybuilding magazines.” “Wait a minute, Jeff,” I said. “I don’t want any bodybuilding magazines, you know how I feel about that stuff.”
“No, no,” he said. “You gotta help me. I’ve been saving every month for years.” “No problem,” I said. “You can use the paper shredder in my office if you want, but you gotta be finished before Angela gets here. We’re going to see a movie in twenty minutes.” He gave me this look of sheer horror.
“You’re crazy, I don’t want to get rid of them. I want you to go through them with me.” Now I was the one with the look of horror. “All of them?” “You bet,” he said. “What the hell for?” I screeched.
“Somewhere in that pile of magazines is the perfect training program, that will pack muscle on me like you wouldn’t believe. I just know it’s in here somewhere, I just gotta find it.” Jeff had this wild determination in his eyes.
“Jeff,” I said. “All you gotta do is lug that box around with you for long enough, that’ll build your biceps like nothing else.” “Now wait a minute!” He motioned towards the pile of magazines on the floor. “I’ve been collecting those for two and a half years. They’re full of cutting-edge information. Right?”
“Some of them,” I said. “Then the perfect program is buried in there somewhere. All I gotta do is find it.” I started laughing at him. “Jeff, I can give you the solution to your muscle gaining problems a lot faster than the time it will take to go through those magazines.”
“Well, what is it?” “Intensity,” I said. He looked like I had just asked him to go clean the bathroom. “I already know about intensity.” “Jeff ol buddy,” I said. “I have seen you workout. If you already know all about intensity, you would never guess from watching you train.”
“Whatta you mean. I work hard.” He said. “You may work about as hard as most guys, but most of those guys don’t see any muscle gains either.” He looked hurt. “It’s not just you, Jeff,” I said. “Practically everyone I know does exactly the same thing. Not one in a hundred guys work with a much intensity as they should.” He gave me a skeptical look. “I’m not kidding,” I said. “Not one in a hundred.”
“Crap,” he said. “How hard do you have to work then?” “To get as big as you want?” I replied. “Yeah,” he spat back. “You really wanna know?” I asked. “Sure,” he said. “You’re not gonna like it.” I replied. “Gimme your best shot.”
“O.K., Jeff,” I said. “I’ll tell you how intense you gotta work.” “But first I better explain one thing. When I say intense, I don’t mean dragging yourself through a hundred exercises. I mean doing a VERY basic program, but working extra hard on each exercise. Intensity is the most important single factor for bodybuilding success. You’ll improve without a lot of other things; but you won’t get far without intensity.” Jeff looked upset, but I continued with my lesson anyway.
“Working hard on your exercises is almost MORE important than the actual exercises you perform. Even the worst of exercises will produce some results if you work hard enough on them. That’s the biggest secret of all. INTENSITY. It will do more to increase your muscle gains than the most “cutting-edge” program you could ever design.
